- Readers Service
All sections that provide or circulate materials to the reader’s service. It supervises and coordinates all the services of the circulation, reserve, reference and periodical section. It handles the loans and supervises the usage of the library collection.
This section houses and circulates books on the general collection and the reserve collection. The General Collection consists of books pertaining to the various disciplines such as Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, Pure and Social Science, Language, Arts, Literature, History and others. The Reserve Collection consists of books and other library materials assigned by faculty as required readings for their respective course.
The circulation section implements the policies and procedures governing the borrowing, renewing, reserving and returning of library materials, signing clearances, payment of overdue fines and suspension of library privileges. It also involves the processing of request for materials.
It handles a collection of extensive reference materials. This section also contains a collection of geographical and historical maps and atlases. All of the above collections are restricted to room use only.
This section houses bound periodicals, both local and foreign. The materials on this section are restricted for room use only.
This unit includes the acquisition and cataloging section. Acquisition is concerned primarily on the selection, ordering or acquiring of books, periodicals and other library materials. The library materials can be acquired through purchase, received as gifts of donation. The cataloging section takes care of the bibliographic description, classification and the physical processing of library materials.
USING THE COLLECTION
Books are arranged on the shelves according to the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Newly acquired books are on display in special shelve near the circulation desk.
Bound periodicals are arranged alphabetically by titles on the shelves for easier access.
Guide for Filipiniana Collection
If you are seeking something distinctively Filipino in GJC Library, the following may point you in the right directions. In the subject entry of subject catalog:
a. Philippines as main entry refer to the country and are subdivided by topics.
e.g. Philippines – History
Philippines – Politics and Government
b. Other topics are subdivided by
1. Geography
e.g. Church & State – Philippines
2. The adjective, Filipino
e.g. Ethics, Filipino
c. Direct entry under the proper name
eg. Luzon
Mendez, Paz Policarpio

Authorized Users
Enrolled students of General de Jesus College, GJC Faculty, Staff and Administrators.
Other Users
a. To serious scholars doing research who have proper ID and recommendations.
b. To faculty members of school on an equal level with GJC who have proper ID.
c. To students of institution on equal level of GJC
- Proper ID
- A letter from the librarian of their home school and approved by GJC VPA.
- They will pay the required amount for their research fee
Circulation Privileges
Only current students, faculty, staff and administrators of GJC have circulation privileges.
Faculty: This is strictly interpreted as those currently
teaching at GJC
- They can borrow unlimited numbers of books except those books with only one (1) copy and are used by students regularly.
- The due date is the last day of each semester.
- At the end of second semester clearance can be issued if the books they borrowed are returned to the library.
- All books should be returned at the end of the second semester for inventory.
Students: They are allowed to borrow two (2) circulation books for
one (1) week. Due on the regular 2 – 7 days pattern.
Monday is the due day for the students borrowed books.
Fines
Materials returned late are subject to overdue fines as follows:
Circulation book – P5.00 per day per book
Reserve book – P10.00 per hour per book
Marking of Books
A fine of P300.00 for marking a book in any way. If the book is marked beyond repair, the patron must replace the book; if cost exceeds P300.00 the student must supply the difference. For folded pages the student will pay P1.00 per page.
Reserving Book
Reserving of books by patrons is used only for books which can be circulated but are not currently on the shelf.
The patron presents the complete reservation slip to the librarian at the desk who clips it on the book card in the file. When the requested book is returned, it may not be renewed; the book is placed behind the desk.
The reservation slip is stamped with the date and posted on the bulletin board. The patron has 3 days to claim the book. If not claimed on time, it is given to the next person requesting it.
Borrowing and Returning Procedure
How to Borrow Books?
1. Check the card catalog to verify if the book is available in the library.
2. On a slip of paper, copy the call number and title of the book.
3. With the call number, look for the book in the shelves.
4. Bring the book to the circulation desk.
5. Check the books for markings.
6. Print last and first name on the book cards.
How to Return Books?
The patron returns the books to the librarian.
How to Renew Books?
1. A book may be renewed as long as no one else has requested it or it does not need repair.
2. The book must be presented to the librarian for renewal.
3. Patrons may only renew book in their own name. No renewal by proxy.
How to Use the Card Catalog?
The card catalog is the primary tool for locating books in the GJC Library. This catalog is divided into three (3) sections – author catalog, a title catalog and a subject catalog. To help you find the books that best meet your needs, here are some basic catalog tips.
If you already know the author or title of a book you want to read, go directly to author or title catalog.
Authors are arranged alphabetically by family name
Name – e.g De Jesus, Simeone
Corporate bodies can also be considered author.
e.g. University of San Carlos
If the title of the book begins with “A”, “An” and “The” look under the second word in the file.
Acronyms are located at the beginning of the series of card for that letter of the alphabet.
e.g. KKK would be found at the beginning
of K’s
If you do not know the title of author of a book on a certain subject, scan the subject catalog.
Subject entries are field under the words or phrases located at the top of the cards.
Many subjects are divided by:
Date – (e.g. Philippine – History 1521-1898)
Place – (e.g. Religion – Philippines)
Form – (e.g. Philippines – Directories)
